Well I gave in and raised a white flag last week and asked for help. I’ve felt tired for so long now, my joints are becoming increasingly more painful, brain fog and not feeling as ‘sharp’ as I normally feel which has been frustrating especially for other people when I tell them the same thing twice in a conversation or mislay my phone only to discover it;s in my hand! Add to that the heavy periods with prolonged bleeding, sometimes a 20 day stretch at a time despite having had a Mirena Coil fitted 6 months before, I knew I just had to do something.
I’ve also chatted to my friends going through the same thing and between us we also could add breast pain, dry skin, mood swings and headaches to the list of symptoms too. The menopause is not an illness or medical condition though but a life event that happens to all women but dealing with the symptoms is a different story for many. So I am going through Peri Menopause and yes I am struggling.
I watched the Davina McCall documentary on C4 and as I’ve said before, despite not being a big fan of hers she did make sense. I also follow the advice of The Menopause Doctor Dr Louise Newson BSc(Hons) MBChB(Hons) MRCP FRCGP GP and Menopause Specialist. Her website is full of clinically led, community driven advice where she is hoping to change the narrative by providing unbiased and factual information, based on the latest evidence available, to inform people to make a choice that’s right for them.
Dr Louise says “People have been suffering with the menopause hormone deficiency for decades and it’s time to put this right. You do not need to put up with debilitating symptoms that affect your daily life, work, relationships and your future health. There is safe, low-cost, effective treatment available, and everybody should know about this and have access to it, should they wish.”

And with all this knowledge and confidence I accepted help in the form of HRT and I’m now 4 days in with the Oestrogel Gel Pump pack. I apply 4 pumps of gel per day to my skin and I am hoping that this will help my brain, my joints and my body through this stage in my life and give ‘me’ back to my family, my loving and supportive partner and my work.
I’ll keep you all posted with how I am getting on.
